Understanding the knowledge gap that keeps Nigerian tailors dependent on repairmen — and how seeing it clearly for the first time changes everything.

A Story to Begin With

I have a friend in Isale-Eko who had been sewing for seven years. Her machine was a black head treadle — the same one her mother had used. It was not a new machine, but it was her machine, and she treated it with something close to reverence.

When I visited her shop, the machine sat on a wooden table in the corner. The paint on the arm had faded. The handwheel was worn smooth at the grip. But when she sat down and pushed the treadle with her foot, that machine sang. Smooth. Steady. Not a single hesitation.

I asked her when she had last called a repairman.

She thought about it for a moment. "Two years ago," she said. "And that was for the electric motor. Nothing to do with the machine itself."

Two years. With a machine almost two decades old. Doing daily orders.

I asked her what she did differently. She pointed to a small tin of sewing machine oil on the shelf. Then she showed me a stiff brush tucked beside it. And then she said the thing I want you to hear before we go any further:

"I know my machine. It does not surprise me. I surprise it."

"Most sewing machine breakdowns are not mechanical failures.
They are knowledge failures."

The thread bunching. The skipped stitches. The grinding noise. The machine that seizes in the middle of an order. The machine that was "fixed" last month and is already misbehaving again. In the vast majority of cases — and I mean the vast majority — these problems trace back to one of four things:

  • Incorrect threading
  • Lint and dust accumulation in the bobbin area and feed dogs
  • Wrong oiling — wrong oil, wrong amount, wrong timing, or wrong location
  • Ignored early warning signs that became expensive faults

None of those are hardware failures. None of them require a trained engineer. None of them were caused by a faulty machine, bad luck, or anything the manufacturer did wrong.

Oiling Incorrectly — Wrong Oil, Wrong Amount, Wrong Timing, Wrong Location

This is the most damaging of the three, because the destruction is invisible until it is severe. A machine that has been oiled with vegetable oil, groundnut oil, palm oil, engine oil, WD-40, or any household substitute does not break down immediately. It keeps sewing. The damage builds slowly, deep inside the moving parts, where you cannot see it — until one day, the grinding begins, or the machine seizes completely, and the repairman tells you something expensive is wrong inside.

Vegetable oils go rancid and become sticky with heat. They harden. They attract lint and create a gummy coating on the very parts that need to move freely. Engine oil is too thick for the precision clearances inside a sewing machine. WD-40 is actually a water-displacement solvent — it strips away proper lubricant and causes corrosion with repeated use. The oiling mistake also includes timing. Many tailors oil only when the machine starts making noise or feeling stiff. By that point, friction damage has already started. The whole purpose of preventive maintenance is to oil before the problem begins — not after it announces itself.

Ignoring Early Warning Signs

Your machine speaks to you. The moment something changes — a new sound, a slight difference in how the handwheel turns, a small shift in stitch quality — that is your machine beginning a conversation. Most tailors, understandably, do not yet know the language. So they wait. They think: maybe it will settle. Let me finish this order first.

And sometimes, it does settle. But more often, the small signal being sent on Monday becomes an expensive fault by Friday. A faint clicking sound (usually a bent needle — corrected in thirty seconds at no cost) becomes a scratched bobbin case if it is ignored long enough. A slightly stiff handwheel that needed one drop of oil becomes a seized hook race if oiling is delayed for weeks.

Machine Note — All Three Types

All three machine types used by Nigerian tailors — the black head treadle, the tabletop electric, and the industrial straight machine — are vulnerable to the same three knowledge-based mistakes.

There is one important exception to know now: most industrial straight machines have an automatic lubrication system with a built-in oil reservoir.   • Question 1 — Oiling timing Do you oil your machine only when it starts making noise, feels stiff, or has already broken down? YES NO If yes: you are oiling reactively. This is one of the most common habits this guide will change — and one of the easiest to fix once you have the correct schedule.

YES NO If no: depending on how often you sew, your machine may already be overdue.
